MLS Musings – Photo Edition!

Despite the short four-day week, this was a LONG one for some of us!

Perhaps laughter is the best medicine?

I personally prefer the “MLS Musings” which contain awful write-ups, spelling and grammar mistakes, and laughable descriptions, but then again, a picture paints a thousand words.

Here are some brutal MLS photos from the past couple weeks…

Considering there are a slew of listings on MLS with “Photo Not Available,” I guess we can start from the ground up, and congratulate those crummy listings that do have photos…

But perhaps the three biggest problems with crummy MLS photos:

1) The unit is dark and/or the photographer didn’t use a flash.
2) The photos are taken sideways.
3) The listing agent didn’t hire a photographer, and used his or her camera-phone.

Here we see a listing with all three: the photos are dark, they’re taken sideways so they’re narrow and tall, and these were clearly not taken by a professional.  Oh – and there’s only five photos, when MLS allows for twenty:

Speaking of “dark photos,” why would somebody take a photo that looks this bad?

I understand – it was night when you took the photo.

But here’s a solution: go back to the property during the DAY!

I don’t know what to say about the following…

I can’t even tell what this is supposed to be.

It almost looks like photos of the common elements, ie. a party room in photo #2, a hallway in photo #3, and maybe a mural in a lobby in photo #4.

I hope when the camera used to take these photos spontaneously exploded, the photographer didn’t lose an eye…

“Calling all laminate-enthusiasts!  Do I have the listing for YOU!”

Here’s nine photos of a vacant unit that clearly display how shiny the floors are.

Note to self: this is why vacant units don’t show well.

Also, note how photo #5 and #6 are almost identical, only the photographer moved about 3-degrees to the right.  Actually, same goes for #7 and #8…

This bedroom doesn’t really say “all the comforts of home.”

It looks like something out of a 70’s Kama Sutra book…

Speaking of bedrooms, this one is a bit weird.

I’m not sure what our friend “gravity” would say about this.  I feel like I might fall out of this bed:

Oh, wait.  Maybe that photo was just put into MLS sideways?

It’s a totally honest mistake, and it could happen to anybody once.

But what about twice?

Am I drunk?  Was the person who took this photo drunk?

Or is this house crooked?

Tilted, just wee bit?

Or was the listing agent/amateur photographer just making a phone call as he was taking this picture:

But I guess if the person that took those photos was drunk, then perhaps they need help getting home.

Thankfully, some listing agents of downtown condos will (for some really, really odd reason…) prominently feature a photo of the unit numbers in the hallway.  I guess some people, who believe in judging a book by its cover, will judge a condo based on the hallway when they get off the elevator?

    No excuse for such uninspiring pictures. People pay for service, and this just shows bad.

    What kills me is when you have condo’s in buildings like the Ritz Carlton and Shangra-La (sp?) listed with no pictures of the unit, just the amenities. You’d think for that kind of commission you’d get an agent who’d spring for 20 pictures.

    I don’t even know that one has to hire a photographer. Good digital cameras are very cheap these days, as are good external flashes, and taking a properly framed and lit photograph is not rocket science.

      It’s not rocket science but it is more difficult than you might imagine. I did my own photos when I sold my place last year and even with a DSLR and a wide angle lens it was a challenge to get them just the way I wanted them to look. And I had the benefit of trying different times for the optimal light conditions. First problem is high dynamic range situations, the second is keystone correction which makes vertical lines vertical and horizontal lines horizontal. I see photos on MLS that look like they were done by a pro yet they are not taken from an optimal height to minimize leaning walls, and they generally not keystone corrected. I seldom see photos that have the dynamic range fixed in post processing. I’m not a pro however I do have a good eye and I am meticulous to get it just right so I probably could be a pro. I have played with the idea of moonlighting as a real estate photographer to make some extra cash. I can probably do a better job for less than many “pros”. In any case you cannot take proper photos with a “very cheap” consumer camera. Most do not come with a wide enough angle to capture most of the rooms especially in today’s shoe box size condos.

    I think this problem of so many part-time agent/new agent in Toronto – dont know how use technology proper. Is terrible for client. That said, dark, depress photo of bare condo remind Chroscklh of 9 yr away at military school. Fond memories like fighting mountain cat for food! Still – I so impress this country – you have the website with the photo, can look ALL across country for place to live. Back home, only sketches allowed, like court-room.
