Do you know where the Canary District is?
Half you are nodding your heads – some of you thinking, “Um, obviously,” but the other half don’t have a clue what I’m talking about.
The Canary District might be the only residential neighbourhood in Toronto that’s named after a restaurant. No, seriously, it actually was! The name is derived from the old “Canary Restaurant” that was in a heritage hotel at Cherry & Front Street, prominently featured in television shows and movies for decades, which anybody my age or older will remember.
When Toronto was announced as the site of the 2015 Pan-Am Games, a portion of the West Don Lands was earmarked for redevelopment, not only to serve as the athletes village for the games, but also to be redeveloped for future residential use.
So today, let’s take a tour of the Canary District, using Google Maps to show how the area has changed just in the last seven years, and I’ll show you five condominiums for sale in five different buildings.
The Canary District might not be the most popular neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, but it is the newest. So give it time, and who knows what it will become!
Hope you enjoy!
