A New Lease On Life (Epilogue)

Leasing/Renting

3 minute read

May 8, 2008

Like I said the other day: real estate is full of ups and downs.

Yesterday was a long, tiresome, trying day.

Then, I got this email from one of the guys I had written about in my blog “A New Lease On Life.”

It turned my day around…

When I called my friend Alec a month ago to ask him how he knew Devon, Barrett, and Roy, he told me they went to school with him at the Richard Ivey School of Business.

He told me that Barrett was, “A freakin’ riot,” and that they sat together in Economics class.

Last night, I emailed Devon, Barrett, and Roy to let them know that I had written about our experiences searching for a lease on my real estate blog, and that they should check it out if they had a chance.

A few minutes later, I got a response from Barrett, which at first glance looked like a serious email.

I should have known better…

Hey David,

Can’t wait to read it….Thanks a lot for your help, by the way.  You were awesome.

I couldn’t have imagined I’d have so much fun looking for accommodations—must be one of the additional services you offer.

If you don’t mind, I’d like to keep in touch as I’ll be looking to buy a place in a year.

My requirements are pretty simple/standard:
-downtown Toronto
-marble flooring
-suede walls
-his and hers kitchens
-Ocean view (which I guess means it’ll have to be on a very high floor)
-parking for one (1) helicopter
-space for a beehive
-2.267 washrooms
-neighbors that don’t typically “press charges”
-and comfortably under $150,000

Thanks!

Barrett

I swear, I must have read this email five times in a row.

I laughed, and then I laughed some more.  I started reading it as if it were a serious email, and when I read the part where he mentioned he’d be looking to buy a place, I thought “Sweet!  New client!”

I guess it was the “suede walls” that was my first clue he was just having fun, but the smile grew on my face as I read on.

It actually took me a few hours to clue in to the “Ocean view” (as opposed to Lake view) and see the humor in that.

I had a long, miserable day yesterday, and this email truly turned my frown upside down, and I received the email just as I was packing up to leave for the day at about 7:30PM.

Sometimes we take our lives, our jobs, and our daily routines a little too seriously.

After my hockey game on Tuesday night, the team went out for a few pints and some wings.  A guy on my team told me he had just signed up for his Phase One of the real estate course, and asked if I had any words of advice for him.  I took a long inhale, and then let out a long sigh.  I didn’t really know where to start!

There are many tougher jobs, and many easier ones, and as I turn on the TV and see the relief efforts in Myanmar after the cyclone, I realize I really don’t have it that bad.

None of us do.

But I feel blessed every day that I have a job that I love, and a job where I get to meet new people every day of the week.

Working with Devon, Barrett, and Roy didn’t seem like “work,” but rather something to do on an otherwise quiet Thursday night.

And Barrett’s email last night found me at the perfect time.

I can’t wait for the housewarming party…
