We’ve discussed in the past at how ridiculous a condominium “den” can be, when it’s often a tiny little nook off other room, with no useful purpose.

And even those dens which are large enough to fit a couch and a chair, might be better purposed if the square footage made for a larger living room, or even for storage space.

In this month’s edition of my web series, we’ll take a look at how a condo den compares today versus that of when we were younger, and offer some suggestions for how you can use your den…

The New Age gym outfit is seriously awesome.

At least this “den” has three walls and an electrical outlet. The worst is the “media area” where all you can put is an umbrella stand. And people still try to pass it off as a +1.

    Excellent video! Loved it.
At least what you presented was a half decent sized den! As commenter above noted, the ‘new style’ den called Media Room is barely a nook! or a cut out of a wall, most likely done to carry the bulk head yet builders want to call this a ‘den’!
    Laughable.

I too grew up in a house with a main-floor wood-paneled den that contained 2 couches, an RCA TV, and a large picture window. I sat in there with my family & we watched TV together – we also had TV tables.
When the house was sold, the den was enlarged and became a family room…. with a 50-in. flat screen TV and wrap-around sofas. The family room or great room is now where the family gathers. The den is something else these days….

    Builder thought process:

1980 – den is essentially a family room with couches, TV, window, etc.
    1990 – well, really a `den`is a man cave and caves don`t have windows.
2000 – also, it`s a man cave, not family cave. So really just need to fit a TV and recliner in there
2010 – everyone watches TV on their computer, so a den just needs to fit a computer table and chair
2015 – everyone now has a huge TV in their living room. So they just need a media area to charge their tablet and or i-phone. 2×1 feet is sufficient, right?
    2020 – virtual den – it’s coming!

In January 2013, I found this air quotes den. It’s the boldest stretch I have seen so far. Nothing I have seen yet beats this one.

Space for a desk and a chair – in any room – living room, bedroom, hall – is a den, apparently.

That was hilarious. I think the room works best as an outsourced jail cell.
