MLS Musings!

3 minute read

April 1, 2022

I’m not really sure what the theme is today.

Perhaps a little bit of everything?

Odds and ends?

Mish-mash?

This-‘n-that?

Odds-n’-sods?

Bits-‘n’bobs?

Knick-knackery?

Bric-a-brac?

Flotsam and jetsam?

Wait……….what?

Yes, apparently “flotsam and jetsam” is a synonym for “this and that,” or “bits and pieces.”

The term comes from the sea world where “flotsam” is the debris in the water that’s not deliberately thrown overboard and “jetsam” is debris purposely thrown overboard by the crew of a ship when in distress, usually to lighten the ship’s load.

Flotsam and Jetsam is also an American thrash metal band:

Flotsam and Jetsam are also characters from The Little Mermaid:

But today, flotsam & jetsam will be the snippets, scraps, offcuts, and sundries found in my “MLS Musings” folder, most of which are from 2022.

Thanks again for the readers and their submssions….

Here’s my favourite contradiction of the week:

“We’re not holding back offers…………………..we just need two full days to hold on to your offer.”

These agents were so excited about their new listing, they put it up on MLS not once, not twice, but thrice!

Not so sure about the choice of feature photo for this unit:

Flowers are pretty and all.

But maybe a photo of the building would have been more appropriate here?

This condominium is listed for $749,900.

Nice condo too!

26 photos of the property.

And they led with………….wait for it……………the parking space as the feature photo!

Really, really weird.

And yet, that one photo might actually be the least weird part about their entire photo array…

Parking, locker, appliances, brand names, serial numbers, the inside of tubs, the floor next to the toilet….

….check, check, check, check, check, chiggity-chekkkk.

I love lake views!

I love city views!

Here’s the lake view:

Here’s the city view:

I can understand the thumb-on-lens if this was 1988 and we had to get these photos developed at Blacks, but in 2022, I’m not so sure.

I’m also not sure how this got past the fine-tuning process of the listing…

Are you impressed by brand-name, designer-goods?

Would you buy a house if somebody randomly scattered shopping bags from The Mink Mile in the walk-in closet?

That would never work…..right?

First, tell me that condos are shrinking, and tell me what we’re making do with less space.

Now, tell me you want to be at a dinner party in this condo when the first guest says, “Excuse me, I’ve got to use the bathroom…”

They may as well have put a urinal on that wall.  It’s the same thing…

Take one look at this photo, and I already know what you’re thinking…

Because I’m thinking the exact same thing!

“I can’t believe these owners have the same bed as me…”

I also can’t believe these owners have the same bathroom swordfish as me…

Pick your favourite part of this photo:

1) Listing agent’s reflection in the mirror
2) Toilet seat proudly up
3) Broken kick-plate from vanity stuck in corner behind toilet
4) Bathroom door key hanging in lock
5) Soap scum near floor drain

“Our house doesn’t require any staging!”

Said to me by many, many clients.

Also said by these people…

“Can you please tell the photographer that when he gets to the condo today for listing photos, we’d like him to step into the kitchen so he only photographs one-third of it, but also to open the fridge and freezer door so we can show off the two bottles of Nestle water that come with the property…”

This photographer literally got down on his stomach to take this photo:

I don’t know about you, but I would love to have a bathtub next to my bed…

They say that, “lighter paint colours make a room feel larger.”

This person clearly did not get that memo:

Last, but certainly not least, if you ever feel the need to build a bar in your basement, make sure there’s an adjacent hot-tub.

Or…….or…………or, if you ever feel the need to build a sauna, steam shower, and open-to-the-elements jacuzzi next to your wall-mounted tv….

……just make sure you also build a bar….

Have a great weekend, everybody!

I am howling! I did miss a photo of an empty toilet paper roll, I must admit. I’ll find one for you, ok?

“To ensure Canada has the workers it needs to fill critical labour market gaps and support a strong economy into the future, the 2022–2024 Immigration Levels Plan aims to continue welcoming immigrants at a rate of about 1% of Canada’s population, including 431,645 permanent residents in 2022, 447,055 in 2023, and 451,000 in 2024. This plan builds on the previous levels plan, with an increased focus on supporting our economic resurgence and post-pandemic growth.” https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/news/2022/02/new-immigration-plan-to-fill-labour-market-shortages-and-grow-canadas-economy.html

P.S. Note to Director and Senior Economist BMO, Robert Kavcic, (and followers):

Any drop in house prices does not suddenly solve the housing supply issue, nor is it vindication of your current theory that demand is the main culprit here. Such conclusions are not helping to resolve the underlying and most important cause of this crisis.
