Photos Of The Week

3 minute read

April 29, 2022

I’d like to start this edition of “Photos of the Week” by pointing out the date: April 29th.

Why is that significant?

Well, there are various reasons.  You probably saw the date and immediately thought of the famous song by Sublime by the same name. “April 29th, 1992” was a hit song from their self-titled album, released in 1996, which described their account of mayhem during the Los Angeles riots on that date.  Of course, the irony is: the lyrics in the song say “April 26th, 1992,” despite the song being called “April 29th, 1992.”

But I digress…

The reason I wanted to point out that today is April 29th is because Christmas Day was 125 days ago.

But these folks, who live at a house I showed on Wednesday, are just throwing out their Christmas tree now:

That’s dedication, folks.

I wonder how long they’ll leave the lights up though?

Men are dumb.

I know, because I am one.

Sometimes, you have to test that theory…

I’m going to be completely honest with you: I didn’t even know this was a door, and I had no intention of opening it.

However, when you put up not one, but two notes like those above, some men just can’t help themselves…

….speaking of which, how many people pulled on this handle?

It wasn’t hard to close, FYI.

This one, I don’t think a lot of people touched.

However, maybe the solution to this problem/catastrophe/lawsuit lays with an ESA certified individual and not a piece of paper?

Define “easy” for me, please…

I’ll give you a hint: it involves major construction.

EASY!

And I might add, “peasey.”

Basement showers aren’t usually as nice as the showers on the second level of a home.

However, a showerhead that’s screwed to a 2 x2 on the ceiling, fed from a water line running through a drilled hole in a joist, which runs underneath an exhaust from the dryer, and is completely exposed and 5’9″ off the ground, probably isn’t how I’d define your “average” basement shower…

There’s a bit of “tech theme” in the photos in my queue.

I’m not sure why.  Coincidence, perhaps?

Let’s take a look…

These folks are loaded up on tech-savvy telephone communication devices:

Home phone, check.

Cordless home phone, check.

Stand-alone answering machine, check.

If the 1990’s make a comeback, they’re ready….

These appliances below were in working order, folks.  Trust me – I checked!

What’s fascinating about these is that I had almost the identical units in my childhood home in the late-1980’s.

When I saw these, I got goosebumps.  I had a flashback.  You that 1/8th of a second where you feel like you’re back in September of 1987?  It was like that.

I remember changing the “fuses” in the back of these machines when they stopped working.  That was always a big treat to fulfil my child-like urge to be manly…

Tell me this isn’t a really old thermostat, eh?

Rocking out in the sauna!

Is that a built-in CD player?

Nope, it’s more!  Zoom in and you’ll see it’s an “MP3 Receiver!”

Tech-heads: is this late-1990’s?  I remember the Rio PMP300 came out in 1998.  That was the first “portable digital music” devices that I can remember…

Speaking of tech, what in the world is this doing in somebody’s house:

I’m not even sure Elon Musk has that in his rocketshiphouse.

The bizarre thing was: this house wasn’t a “smart house” at all.  It didn’t seem all that tech-heavy, and then there’s a false-fall in the basement and this is what’s behind it.

If the next US Federal Election is hijacked, it might be originating from this Toronto basement…

Is this the ugliest light fixture you’ve ever seen?

No?

You think there’s worse out there?

How about this one?

Or maybe this one?

Those are all from the same condo.

So clearly there’s only one person with tastes that…………um…………unique.

However, I think I found a new contestant:

You know you’ve officially made it in life when you dedicate an entire shelf in your linen closet to pocket squares:

Is the placement of this toilet odd, or is it the placement of the window?

Perhaps the better question is: if you were on the sidewalk outside, walking your dog, and you looked up and this person waved to you, would you wave back?

Speaking of toilets…

And last, but certainly not least, here’s a reminder that good neighbours make a great community:

Have a great weekend, everybody!

I noticed the toilet and sink combo often in Japan, mostly in places when the toilet is in its own room. Strange to North Americans perhaps, but more hygienic to wash your hands after using the toilet and before touching the toilet room door…

I think this also saves water, as the water from washing your hands fills up the toilet tank.

I can corroborate on the sink-toilet combo being common in Japan, especially in smaller budget units. Even though Canada is a freshwater powerhouse and I’m not an eco-nut by any means, I still believe there is value in water- and space-saving designs like this.

That “tech” rack looks to be mostly audio equipment. My guess is they have a lot of built-in speakers in that house. It isn’t actually all that unusual to have an audio rack in a high-end house, although this one is a bit over the top.

Looks like a professional wiring job: neatly run and zip-tied cables. Bonus points if they had been braided.

      Not even that high end.

Design Electronics has a project called Hatcher smart home that has 3 racks and a bunch of Steinway Lyngdorf components.

When you Google the prices of those components and the required speakers you’ll be SHOCKED. Amazing tech though.

    I don’t mind the window/toilet.
