Terrible Condo Design

Condos

< 1 minute read

October 9, 2013

Not the condo itself, but rather an element of the individual unit.

I know I’m critical of condos in the city, and on a long enough time horizon, I’ll probably have something to say about your building.

So today, I’ll show you one of the worst-designed condo features in existence, and it happens to be in my building on George Street…

Don’t even get me started on the “water saving toilets.”

I don’t want to get into specifics here, folks.  You might be enjoying your morning bagel…

But there’s a reason that toilets have water in them, and without that water….well….’nuff said…

    1) I hate our VU sinks not only because they’re flat and square, but also because they’re matte dirt magnets that are hard to clean.
    2) You can change the water flow by just removing the little attachment at the end of the faucet and replacing it with a different piece. I swapped both of mine out for a 1.5 GPM (or 5.7 L/min in metric) piece 3 years ago right after moving in since I couldn’t even wash my face.

      @ GeorgyBoy

Hahahaha I figured somebody would mention that!

That paper towel was to wipe out the sink because I did two takes of this video after my damn battery ran out!

It’s not so much the flat-bottomed sink that would bother me – it’s the poor water pressure and slow draining sink. If you had decent pressure and drainage, the sink would probably be much more functional. What are people in that building doing that all the drains are mucked up?

The water pressure is actually fine.. There’s a eco-friendly restricting filter on the tap which is constricting it in this video. It just takes a trip to Canadian Tire and less than a minute to swap them out. VU is LEED certified so the builder’s fixtures are low flow everything..

As a not-so-manly man, masquerading as a true man, I will admit that I have no idea how to fix this valve.

Maybe I’ll ask my wife for help…

    Install a better sink?

We had a sink like this in a hotel room. I poured out the water from a insulated jug that we have in the car when travelling and the water splashed up over the edge and all over the floor. Design fail!

I look at floor plans and I think that most condo floor plans are the pits. Poorly laid out kitchens. Bathrooms across the apartment from the bedroom. Bathrooms that open into the living area. Doors to the balcony from the bedroom instead of the living room. Too much window area esp. in bedrooms or the opposite, bedrooms without windows.. One recent one bedroom plus den in which the bedroom had a too small closet and no room for a dresser unless you placed the bed against the window and the den was really the dining area. Another 2-bedroom in which the second bedroom had a narrow corridor to the window. And people buy them!

Poor draining? I know some people getting floods from poor drainage and water backing up. At a large development whose initials are C.P… I know a person who put a stop valve at the bottom of their kitchen sink. When they leave the house they turn it off so water won’t flood their unit repeatedly.

Why is the drainage so poor in that building? Is it limited to the bathroom sinks or is it the kitchen sinks as well?
