“What If The Whole World Worked The Same As The Toronto Real Estate Industry?”

Special Features

2 minute read

April 1, 2015

We’re in the hottest real estate market on the planet, and we’ve become so desensitized to just how crazy the day-to-day workings of the Toronto market have become.

So I want to drive that point home by comparing real estate to the real world, and putting a real estate spin on commonplace activities in a “Web Series” that I’ll be featuring once per month.

In the first installment: just imagine if other products and services were sold in the same fashion as pre-construction condos…

My social media team has been building this up pretty big, so I hope it satisfied.

I guess the point of this Web Series is to show just how crazy the Toronto real estate market, and industry, have become.

Sometimes, the best way to draw attention to something is by bringing it down to the most basic level, and what better way to do that than use every-day, real-life comparisons?

When it comes to pre-construction condos, I feel as though most of the public has caught on by now, and yet there are still some folks out there that just don’t see how unbelievably crooked and backwards this industry has become.

These folks don’t follow the numbers, or don’t listen to reason; they simply hear what they want to hear, and see what they want to see.

So maybe, just maybe, the best way to get through to them is to simplify it to the point of “You wouldn’t buy a $90 pair of jeans like this, so why do people buy half-million-dollar condos like this?”

Not every video I feature will be taking such a firm stance (and potentially drawing the ire of every developer in the city…), but rather seek to bring some humour and levity to real estate.

Remember when buying a house was fun?

Neither do I.

In fact, buying a house or condo in Toronto has become one of the most stressful and frustrating tasks you can take on in 2015.

I also believe – and the end of the video clearly shows that, yes, I’m promoting myself as an experienced real estate professional – that our market is so intense in 2015 that there are incredible risks associated with making a mistake on a purchase or sale, and much of that stems from the individual that a buyer or seller hires from the get-go.

Throughout this “Web Series,” I’ll try to cast a light on some of the most important aspects of real estate, and both entertain, and educate the viewer.

We all take in information in different ways.

Some people need to listen, some need to watch, and some need to read.

Personally, I think a little humour never hurt. 🙂

This is where, Islamabad? Or some other ISIS infested backwater shithole?

        @Boris
You are close.. It is India. By the way Islamabad (Pakistan) and Chandigarh(India) are only two planned cities in Indian subcontinent. They are no backwater shitholes by any means.

Faridabad rhymes with Islamabad and you jumped the prejudiced gun.

Islamabad or Faridabad, Shaivi’s spam still has no place in TRB comments. Go away, both of you.

It’s spam for a preconstruction condo in North India. That’s… pretty impressive in a way.

I never thought about it like that before, but pre-construction condos are basically real estate Kickstarter… Huh.

Yeah I have to second that. You’ve really raised the bar here.

If I had to guess, I’d think a video like this cost over $1K to film, and you’ve basically done this to amuse your readership, and as an educational tool as well, but it’s just awesome that you’re willing to go to such great lengths.

    Bravo!

Hilarious! I doubt David would go to the trouble of producing a video like this as an idle amusement or a gift to his loyal fans.

It’s a marketing piece. It’s good. It will lead to more clients. Annnnd I’m willing to bet, significant time, effort and dollars have been invested.

    Very well done.
I have seen a couple of new condos during the occupancy nightmare and I hope you do a video about what that experience is like.

I would hate to have to move into a building that was not completed, only because my unit was done already. The mess and the noise would be awful. They should not be allowed to do that to people. Of course, it would seem that there are a lot of things that pre-construction condos do that they should not be allowed to do…yet people keep lining up to buy them. Weird.

The chicken skewers comment made me spew coffee across the room. Those friends/family developer functions are blending together…has anyone seen plans for new Lakeshore pre-condos where the developer wants to build an outdoor movie theatre near the pool? Yeah, for the 2 weeks a year it’s usable. But name the condo South Beach, no one will notice

Why limit your rage to pre-construction? We regulate the sale of used cars better than we do that of residential real estate – IMAGINE IF EVERYTHING YOU PURCHASED WAS BY WAY OF A BLIND AUCTION?!

Almost all of your criticisms regarding your industry stem from the manner in which your governing body allows homes and condos to be purchased – full stop. If you didn’t have blind auctions, you wouldn’t have to legislate against phantom offers or worry about idiot agents making offers they have no intention of being bound by.

The problem is one of self-regulation and outright greed. It’s almost like a team initiation or hazing. No point complaining after you’ve been burned – you’ll just get the next guy when you sell.
